Message from Fiona Field, Independent Chair:

Hello and Welcome to our newsletter from the Bath and North East Somerset Community Safety and Safeguarding Partnership, I am delighted to have joined the Partnership as the new Independent Chair since the 3rd January 2023.

I thought it would be helpful to describe my background and also how I hope we will progress the important work of the Partnership this year and into the forthcoming years. I have had a career in both social care and in the NHS for 38 years in Cheshire.

I started work with long stay psychiatric patients, moving them from a hospital ward and into community settings, most people having never had their own room or privacy. It taught me valuable lessons about institutional care and the effects this can have on a person’s life.

I have worked with all age groups, and in both commissioning and directly providing care.

I have worked in multi disciplinary teams for most of my career and have found these to be the most co-ordinated, effective way to provide care around an individual.

I have been a family carer 4 times giving me good understanding of how to involve family members in the planning and delivery of care to their loved one at the most vulnerable time of their life.

I have been a Trustee at a hospice in Plymouth for 6 years and I am very proud of the work the teams do to support and care for individuals and their families at home. As a Trustee, I helped establish a young carers charity where I met inspiring young people looking after their parent or sibling whilst trying to maintain school, friends and aspirations for their life.

I have chaired the Safeguarding Adults Board for Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly for 6 years and continue to do so. We have achieved many successes as well as continuing with challenges but as I am a keen advocate of partnership, I see this as the way to achieve progress. I see this partnership approach in action in Bath and North East Somerset with willingness to improve together.

I am planning an away day for members of the Partnership on 21st April – we will all have opportunity to plan and implement changes to streamline the work of the Partnership and bring opportunities to deliver practical solutions for our local area. The Peer Review in June 2022 gave us a valuable insight into the Partnership with recommendations for improvement that will guide us to bring about the changes. I have spent time joining current groups that support the work of the Partnership and meeting individuals to hear their views in how to improve. I hope that we will continue to build on the great work so far.

Bath and North East Somerset has an innovatory Partnership in place that has identified shared priorities for community safety and safeguarding. As a Partnership, it will be our role to ensure these are being addressed locally. I look forward to meeting many more people in the local area and also raising the awareness of the Partnership and its’ important work.
